Mankind has been coughing since… well, forever. Or so it seems. The best remedies to the cough have always been the natural ones. Long before the first pain-killing tablets were ever synthesized in a laboratory, folks were turning to lavender, ginseng, and cannabis for relief.
Obviously, there is a place for western medicine and drugs, but a cough – be it dry, wet, wheezing, or other – usually has its own “personality,” and should be treated as such. I’m not saying don’t get diagnosed and properly treated by your doctor – please do. All I am saying is: don’t run to the pharmacy when you can turn to your cupboard instead.
A variety of natural ingredients exist for treating different types of coughs, but I feel that there is a recipe that would be beneficial for most kinds of coughs and especially the persistent winter cough. Remember that strength and efficiency vary according to condition and sensitivity, so you may need to adjust your amounts and dosage.
DIY Cough Drops Recipe
Ingredients (organic, whenever possible):
½ cup – filtered water (or mineral, if that’s your thing).
1 tspn – turmeric powder.
1 tspn – black pepper (freshly ground).
2 crushed cloves – garlic.
Onion juice or hot paprika extract. Start small with these. Don’t overdo it.
Honey and apple cider vinegar are also ingredients you can introduce, though these may be better off taken as a standalone syrup, rather than mixed into a comprehensive recipe.

These ingredients have been serving mankind since ancient times, and there’s no reason to stop taking advantage of their natural benefits now.
Turmeric is especially great with dry coughs. It aids the body in flushing out toxins and harmful bacteria.
Black pepper improves the flow of mucus, which is why it would be beneficial for those who are getting over a phlegm-filled cold.
- Garlic – specifically its powerful aroma – has a way of tapping into the brain’s cough center, not unlike pharmaceutical drugs. It also contains anti-bacterial and antiviral agents which help to mitigate the ongoing cough.
- Onion Juice – capable of fighting not only throat soreness but chest congestion. Be careful, it is powerful, so adjust your dose accordingly.
- Honey is perhaps the most well-known and most-turned to throat medicine, and for good reason. It is capable of soothing and healing irritated throats. It accomplishes this by drawing the water out of the inflamed tissue in the throat. Tastes pretty good, too.
- Apple Cider Vinegar boasts medicinal properties which make it impossible for germs to survive the acidic coating it provides. An ideal vinegar to turn to if your sore throat goes beyond mild-to-moderate.
Heat water in a small pot.
Add all ingredients gradually and stir until unified.
Let cool. Store in a tightly closed jar, in the fridge, for up to a week.
Remember, this is meant to end up in a dropper. If you’re going for the full on “drop effect,” use an ice cube tray with small slots and freeze your formula accordingly. Make sure to pay attention to the effect of the drop in order to know whether or not you are in need of more or less treatment!
